Good morning, everyone. My name is Susan. It’s so nice to see all of you here today. I hope you’re ready for an exciting story because I am going to share something really special with you. Today, I want to tell you a famous story from Indonesia. It’s about love, cleverness, and courage.
This story also teaches us that even when things seem impossible, we can find ways to solve problems if we think carefully. Are you ready? Let’s begin. The title is Roro Jong Rang.
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. The people lived happily and peacefully. But one day, another kingdom attacked them. This kingdom was Pengging, and its king was Bandung Bondowoso. He was not a kind king. He was greedy and mean. He also had magical powers and an army of humans and genies.
After winning the war, Bandong Banduoso became the new ruler of Prambanan. Meanwhile, the old king had a beautiful daughter named Roro Jong Rangrang. She was very beautiful. When Bandung Bondowoso saw her, he fell in love and wanted to marry her.
One day, Bandung Bondowoso said to her, “You are so beautiful. Will you marry me?” Roro Jonggrang was shocked. She didn’t want to marry him because he was cruel and made her people suffer. But she was also scared. If she said no, Bandung Bondowoso might hurt her or her people. So, she came up with a clever plan.
She said, “If you really want to marry me, you must build 1,000 temples in just one night.” Bandung Bondowoso thought it was impossible, but he didn’t give up. He asked his advisor for help.
The advisor said, “My king, ask your genie soldiers to help you.”
So, Bandung Bondowoso called all his genies and ordered them to build the temples. They worked very fast, and by midnight, they were almost done. Roro Jonggrang heard this news and felt worried. She quickly called her servants and said, “Help me burn straw and pound mortar to make loud noises.” Her servants did as she asked.
The fire from the burning straw looked like sunlight, and the pounding noise sounded like morning. The genie saw the light and heard the sounds. They thought it was sunrise and ran away because genies are afraid of sunlight.
When Bandung Bondowoso realized what happened, he was furious. He knew Roro Jonggrang had tricked him. “You cannot fool me,” he shouted. “I have already built 900 mini-night temples. I only need one more.” Then, using his magic powers, he turned Roro Jonggrang into stone. She became the 1,000th temple.
Even today, those temples still stand in Prambanan, central Java. One of them is called the Roro Jonggrang Temple.
And that’s the end of the story. What do you think? Roro Jonggrang was very clever, wasn’t she? But remember, sometimes being too tricky can have big consequences. Thank you for listening, and I hope you enjoyed the story.
