Two weeks ago, a big flood hit Demak, Central Java. It happened after very heavy rain for three days. The water from the river rose quickly because a levee (tanggul) broke. My family and I were at home when the water started to enter our village on Thursday night.

First, the water entered our garden, and then it came into our living room very fast. My father shouted to everyone to wake up. We immediately moved our motorcycles and furniture to a higher place. However, the water kept rising until it reached our chests.

Next, a rescue team from BPBD came with a rubber boat. They helped us to evacuate because the electricity was turned off and it was very dark. We brought only a small bag of clothes and our cellphones. We went to the grand mosque near our village that served as a shelter. We stayed there for five days with hundreds of other people.

Finally, after the water receded, we returned home. The house was full of thick mud and some of our wooden chairs were broken. It took us three days to clean everything.

I felt very sad seeing my village under water, but I was thankful that my family and neighbors were all safe. This experience taught me to be more careful and always be ready for natural disasters.
